The following is a broad overview of some of the people and institutions who you should be alerting of your change of address.

However, the admin isn’t as much fun. So before you pack up and go, it’s advisable that you let all the relevant people and institutions know where they can find you...

Start notifying the relevant parties of your change of address 30 days before the move. You can do this via phone, fax or in person. However, to save time, most institutions will provide you with the option to change your address online via a website.

The following is a broad overview of some of the people and institutions who you should be alerting of your change of address:

• Bank
• Government organisations such as SARS
• Insurance broker/company
• Driving and motor vehicle licensing authority
• Pet microchip registry
• TV licensing authority
• Subscriptions (Magazines, Charities etc)             
• Staff
• Cellular provider
• Financing authority

When it comes to transferring utilities such as council rates, water and electricity, you will need to pay these accounts upfront and transfer them into the name of the new homeowners. The same will apply to your new home as the previous owner/tenant will transfer the new utilities accounts into your name.

You can also transfer your current landline number to your new home, however, this depends on the location of your new residence and whether it falls within the same area code as your previous house.

Once you have moved into your house, you will need to reconnect various other utilities you need, so before moving day, contact your internet service provider and schedule a day to have the phone line or ADSL connection installed. This also applies to DStv and security device installations.
