Women in Property: Leading with care

In celebration of Women’s Month, we step inside the world of real estate to highlight and honour the diverse and powerful impact of women across the industry. Through their leadership, expertise and lived experiences, they are transforming the way we buy, sell and experience property.

Debra Maddocks, branch manager for Tyson Properties Helderberg and Alet Ollemans, licensee for Seeff Plettenberg Bay, share what it's really like to be a woman in the real estate industry, what they love most about their work, and what continues to inspire them.

The Why: What is the most rewarding part of your day-to-day work in property?

"A few years ago, my answer would’ve been different. It was about securing the sale, getting those signatures, and knowing I’d found a home for another family. Now that I’ve moved from sales agent to mentor, coach, and Branch Manager of Tyson Properties Helderberg, my perspective has shifted. The most rewarding part is watching our candidate agents grow. I get to be there for their first listing, their first sale, or their first "I got this" moment.

"Managing the Helderberg branch means I get to build a team, protect our culture, and help people build careers, not just do deals. Helping others succeed is now my measure of success," she says.

The reality check: What is one myth about being a successful woman in real estate that you’d love to bust?

Maddocks  says that the myth that she wants to debunk, is that "you have to be tough or pushy to succeed in real estate".

What actually works is authenticity, according to her. "Clients don’t buy from a persona — they buy from someone they trust. My success has come from showing up consistently, doing what I say I’ll do, and leading with care. Those qualities aren’t a weakness in real estate. They’re the advantage," she says.

The daily motto: What’s one daily habit or principle that has contributed most to your career success?

"Be real. Be honest. Be consistent. Show up as yourself and do what you say you’ll do," is what keeps Maddocks going.

The Why: What is the most rewarding part of your day-to-day work in property?

Ollemans most rewarding part of her day is, when, she ends up with a client who is highly satisfied with our service and very happy to be in their new home. "The most rewarding part of real estate is that we guide clients through what is often the most significant financial transaction of their lives to find their dream home. Property decisions are deeply personal, and earning the absolute trust of both buyers and sellers is a valued privilege. Helping them to navigate this journey smoothly and seeing them step confidently into their next chapter brings immense purpose and joy to our work as real estate professionals," she says.

The reality check: What is one myth about being a successful woman in real estate that you’d love to bust?

Ollemans disagrees that being "lucky" and that success comes easy is what leads to being successful. "In reality, deep emotional intelligence, active listening, and strong relationships are precisely what is needed to build trust, secure the best deals, and drive lasting success in real estate regardless of your gender," she believes.

The daily motto: What’s one daily habit or principle that has contributed most to your career success?

"Show up and be consistent every single day with unwavering focus and dedication as this builds lasting client trust and fuels real career success," says Ollemans.
