UP gets new halls, parking lot

17 Aug 2009
The University of Pretoria (UP) has expanded its engineering school with six new lecture halls and a parking lot.

Odoko undertook all Bulk Earthworks for the project which began in early May. "A bulk earthworks project of this magnitude is challenging with many complex elements including environmental responsibilities and archeological finds," says Akbar Alli Hassim, business development director at civil engineering contractor Odoko.

To meet the challenges Odoko has had key staff on site working over 13-hour shifts to ensure that the end of July deadline was kept. The company has also been working closely with UPE's environmentalist, Jeno Biljon, and health and safety officer, Frans Fouche, to ensure that the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and Health & Safety Specifications has been strictly adhered to – especially considering the site's high level of human traffic and proximity to the botanical gardens.

The bulk earthworks and lateral support component of the project is estimated at R13,5m.

Despite the surprise archeological discovery of the remains from the university's old arch building and an ash-mitten (landfill) dating from the 1920's, excavators also uncovered chemistry apparatus and various other items over 80 years old.
