Agri SA is calling on South Africans to donate fresh grass cuttings for hundreds of farm animals that are in desperate need of animal feed.
Hope Grass Project, a community based initiative, is responding to the crisis by collecting grass trimmings which will be processed into animal feed pellets and distributed to afflicted farms and districts.As a consequence of the persistent dry and hot weather, a lack of water and crops, animals in drought-stricken regions like KwaZulu-Natal are dying, and many more are in critical condition.

According to Christo van der Rheede, deputy executive director of Agri SA, any company, organisation, church and municipality can get involved. He says the typical process involves designating a field where community members, organisations, schools, municipality departments and businesses can drop off the grass that is then taken and processed.
Currently, there are four dropoff sites in the Roodepoort/Krugersdorp area, Centurion, Toutrek Park in Pretoria and Waterkloof Ridge.
