Just 15km from George, between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Wilderness is made up of a mix of permanent residents and holiday homeowners, with close to 80% of all property in the area made up of freestanding homes, according to property statistics provider, Lightstone.
The statistics reveal that 38% of recent buyers in the area were between the ages of 36 and 49, with the 50 to 64 year old category following close behind, accounting for 35% of recent buyers in the area.
No matter who or how old buyers in the area are, Van der Merwe says all buyers are more conscious than ever before of getting value for their money when it comes to investing in property. He says home buyers want to know that they are getting the best deal possible, while still buying a property that meets all of their requirements.

With high-end properties in Wilderness ranging from R15 million upwards, he says the ‘best buy’ price bracket in the year ahead will be somewhere between R2.5 million and R4 million. They occasionally get houses on the market under the R2 million mark, but these are few and far between.
Van der Merwe says buyers, whether as permanent residents or holiday home or investment buyers, are all drawn to the lifestyle on offer, which includes proximity to the beach, as well as the great views from the sea, lagoon, lakes, rivers, mountain and forest views, or all of the above.
