James grew up on a family farm in the Paarl area and his entire schooling was done at Paarl Boys Primary and High School. He was, and still is, keen on all forms of sports. Having played rugby and swum competitively at school and university, he now sees scuba diving and fishing as a perfect way to spend time relaxing with his wife

and two boys. Following his schooling he completed his compulsory national service and left the army with the rank of Lieutenant. He then attended Rhodes University where he qualified with a BSc Honours degree in Ichthyology.
