Women in property: Women leading the way in SA real estate

As we celebrate Women's Month, we embark on a journey to explore and honour the dynamic and diverse roles that women are playing in shaping the landscape of real estate.

Nicole Horwood, real estate agent for Pam Golding Properties in Midrand, Elaine Vandayar, licensee for Seeff Richards Bay, Noelene Snyder Rawson Properties Kuilsriver, share their journey into the real estate sector, what inspired them to pursue a career in the field, and what it takes to achieve success.

How did you get started in the property industry, and what inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

My entry into the property industry was quite unique. I had close ties with equestrian friends who were not only deeply rooted in the local riding community but were also a well known and respected name in real estate within our area. Their passion for the industry and deep understanding of the equestrian lifestyle made a lasting impression on me. They generously took me under their wings mentoring me through every aspect of the business understanding local market dynamics, client relationships and understanding the unique needs of buyers and sellers in our area. What inspired me to pursue this path was seeing how real estate especially in equestrian areas is about so much more than property it’s about a lifestyle rooted in space, freedom and a deep connection to nature. It’s also about people and how every client, every transaction and every property tell a different story. It’s one of the few industries that combines so many disciplines, marketing, finance, negotiation, customer service, legal compliance and strategic planning all in one.

What advice would you give to other women aspiring to build a successful career in the property sector?

Whether you’re negotiating a deal or advising a client, own your space and trust your expertise. Invest time in building a strong network of mentors and peers, surround yourself with experienced professionals and a team that supports you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek advice, mentorship can be a game changer particularly in the early stages of your career. Be prepared to face challenges and don’t let them derail your progress. Rejection, challenging markets and difficult transactions are all part of the journey. What will set you apart is resilience, adaptability and the ability to keep learning and evolving. Every obstacle is a lesson and every lesson is a step forward. This industry rewards those who are not only knowledgeable and hardworking but also genuine and passionate about helping others find their place in the world.

In your experience, what unique skills or perspectives do women bring to the property industry?

Women bring a holistic people-centred perspective to the property space. We often excel in understanding both the emotional and practical needs of clients as well as enjoy actively participating in community development. We are empathetic active listeners with attention to detail which helps us build meaningful client connections. For many people buying or renting a property is not just a financial transaction, it’s a deeply personal and emotional milestone. A home represents stability, identity, aspiration and often years of hard work and saving. It's where families are raised, memories are made and futures are built. Women tend to be strong collaborators and active listeners which enhances relationships.

Elaine Vandayar

A dynamic leader focused on excellence, inclusivity, family and community, Elaine is not only a multi-award-winning licensee within the Seeff Group, but her broader community and business achievements include being named best estate agency in Zululand. Elaine leads a multi-awarding winning and top performing branch in KZN.

How did you get started in the property industry, and what inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

I have been in the real estate industry for 19 years, with the first two years as an estate agent. My passion for real estate began when my husband and I, as teenagers, purchased our first home. The entire process from home viewings to interactions with banks and attorneys truly captivated me.

This fascination led me to Seeff, a prominent brand in our area, where I sought to deepen my understanding of the sector. A few years later, my husband, after completing his MBA, encouraged me to consider purchasing Seeff, even during a challenging market recession. We were confident that success and growth would follow.

I am truly honoured to be in this highly responsible role. I excel at identifying inefficiencies and implementing systems that boost productivity. I am committed to inspiring my team, helping each member recognize their strengths and reach their full potential.

I hold myself and my team to exceptionally high standards, continuously benchmarking against industry leaders and successful individuals from all walks of life to foster daily learning and growth. This dedication extends to my business, as I consistently strive to push boundaries and achieve new levels of success.

I firmly believe that there are no bad teams, only ineffective leaders. Therefore, I prioritise my team's well-being and focus on the softer aspects of leadership, such as coaching and mentoring, to help them achieve new heights.

What advice would you give to other women aspiring to build a successful career in the property sector?

Start where you are, be willing to learn, and stay rooted in your passion. Real estate is not always easy it requires patience, self-motivation and a real commitment to service. But if you’re consistent and authentic, the rewards are deeply fulfilling. Also, surround yourself with people who uplift you. I was fortunate to begin my journey at Seeff, where I was encouraged and empowered from day one. Women belong in this industry, and we are capable of achieving so much more than we sometimes give ourselves credit for.

In your experience, what unique skills or perspectives do women bring to the property industry?

Women have a remarkable ability to connect and to listen, not just to what clients say, but to what they’re feeling. We bring a personal touch to the process, a sense of care and attention that can make all the difference in a client’s experience. Whether it’s guiding a first-time buyer or helping a family navigate a big life change, women often approach these moments with empathy, detail, and professionalism. That combination is powerful in an industry that’s all about people.

Noelene Snyder

How did you get started in the property industry, and what inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

I love interacting with people and when I decided to quit my 9 to 5 job in 1995, I saw an advertisement that read: “Write your own cheque” and those few words inspired me to go for the interview. During the interview, I realised that this is a profession in which I would love to build my career and immediately knew that this was what I wanted to do. It has been the best decision I’ve made. It gives me great joy to see the expression on the face of satisfied buyers and sellers when a transaction is concluded.

What advice would you give to other women aspiring to build a successful career in the property sector?

Women have become a great force in the real estate industry and because it is Women’s month, I want to encourage those thinking of building a career for themselves to claim their space in Real Estate. There are so many possibilities for e.g. rental, sales, commercial, etc… take advantage of the opportunities that are awaiting you. For centuries it has been perceived that women are only good enough to be home executives but not anymore, this is a career that gives you the flexibility to be with your family while building your career.

In your experience, what unique skills or perspectives do women bring to the property Industry?

Because women are mothers and wives. housewives etc, they have the right attributes to deal with clients therefore some often become the best in the industry. It is however imperative to gain the necessary skills when you enter the profession. For me, it was worthwhile to join an established company where I not only gained knowledge but also acquired the necessary skills and qualifications required. Ensure that you follow the right steps (legislation) to become the professional you want to be.
