Global market research group New World Wealth recently reviewed the top residential estates in South Africa, and one of the sub-categories in the report was ‘retirement villages’.

“Retirement villages generally refer to estates that cater to over 60s and they normally have on-site healthcare facilities,” says head of research at New World Wealth, Andrew Amoils. “Most of them offer independent living (cottages and apartments) plus assisted living and frail care units.”
Ratings criteria included: communal gardens and parks, location and scenery, maintenance, security, activities available, and healthcare facilities.
New World Wealth’s top five retirement villages in South Africa for 2019 are:
1. Waterfall Hills
Waterfall Hills Retirement Estate is located in Waterfall City in Johannesburg. It is well established and in the prime part of Waterfall City, on the hill and next to the exclusive Waterfall Equestrian Estate.
Helderberg Village is situated in Somerset West in the Western Cape. It is well established and the estate is quite extensive - it features a 9-hole golf course, several lakes, croquet lawns, bowling greens and tennis courts.
This estate is located in Hermanus on the Whale Coast and is run by Faircape. The village comprises a range of cottages and semi-detached homes, all with lovely views and scenery. It is well established.
4. Evergreen Val de Vie
This upcoming retirement village in Paarl in the Cape Winelands is run by Evergreen. It is located within the exclusive Val de Vie estate, which is one of the top residential estates in the world. The village was rated ‘off-plan’ as it is not yet complete.
5. Clé du Cap
This estate in Kirstenhof, Cape Town, is run by Faircape. The village is well established and has a unique 'townhouse feel', with gardens and communal areas.
