Free State is best place to live

11 Aug 2006
The Free State appears to be the most enjoyable province to live in. The most sought after residential area in the country is Dan Pienaar in Bloemfontein. Kimberley in the Northern Cape is also known as one of the top towns in South Africa to live in.

These are the findings of Finweek and leading market researcher, Ask Afrika, in a recent study aimed at determining to what degree peri-urban inhabitants' needs are taken of.

"Dan Pienaar consistently fared better in most categories than any of the other suburbs included in the survey of quality of living," says Finweek.

One of the categories in which Dan Pienaar excelled was the quality of its schools. The schools in the neighbourhood are considered among the best in the country. The degree of trust in the police in this neighbourhood is also higher than anywhere else.

Research has shown that Monumenthoogte/Royaldene in Kimberley is the third safest suburb to live in.

"The mining town has no shortage of wealthy residents either. More than 30% of Kimberley's respondents earn more than R30 000 per month.

Along with Waterkloof in Pretoria, this is the third highest in the country.

Research has shown that Dan Pienaar's most attractive aspect is the low crime rate and the proximity of business centres, hospitals, shopping centres and schools.

What's more, Dan Pienaar was third highest on the list of residential areas with a strong community spirit.

"Most respondents told us that they would not likely relocate from Dan Pienaar, since according to them the suburb has the best to offer in Bloemfontein.

"The suburb does not have to contend with noise, air pollution, litter and vandalism. One thing residents feel could be improved in Dan Pienaar is in the area of municipal services.

According to research, Bloemfontein's neighbourhoods have the least problems with water and power supplies.

Six months ago, the Fourie family moved to Dan Pienaar from another suburb. "Here, the children can ride their bicycles safely, even in the evenings -- something which they could not do previously," said Mrs Alta Fourie. Her husband, David, agrees that the neighbourhood is quiet and safe.

They support the research findings that the services rendered contribute to the satisfaction of residents. - Jana Roos

  • Good day!
It is true that Dan pienaar is the most clean and it is near the schools, hospital and shopping malls one doesnt need to run around especially far from their
homes but i think it is because most of the people who are living in that area are mostly the Senior citizens, those people are very disciplined and
    well mannered.

Unlike if you visit other suburbs you will find more people on the street and others will make noise playing their radios loud and you can't even say
a word. But with Dan Pienaar, once you enter that vicinity you smell happiness and cleanliness. I say keep it up the residence of DP.
