Create an emergency home exit

17 Apr 2013

What would you do if you had to leave your home in a hurry but couldn’t get out using any of the doors?  It’s not something we like to think about, but emergency situations like a fire or a home invasion do happen, and it’s a good idea to be prepared.

Teach your children and child minder how to use the emergency exit.

Windows are usually protected from a housebreaking by fixed security but there are a number of burglar proofing options that can open when you need them to.  Therefore, when you’re looking for window protectors choose security barriers that open easily.

Trellidor shares a simple solution to equipping your home for an eventuality - window security barriers that open for a quick escape.

1. For a speedy exit consider installing retractable burglar bars that look just like the more commonly known security gates.  They work in exactly the same way as safety gates, sliding to the side on a bottom track and openining easily with a key using a single lock point.

2. Security screens or Clear Guards are a new technology. These can be designed to open in a number of ways - sliding on a track, opening like a sash window or as a hinged, French or awning window.

3. Automated roller shutters made of aluminium are the best as they are lighter than steel and open quickly, quietly and easily once activated by the hand-held remote or wall-mounted control.  These can be custom made to fit your window and operation preferences.

Emergency escape window location

In a perfect world, it would be ideal to have security barriers that open on all windows in your home.  This would make cleaning windows and window sills so much easier as the burglar bars could be moved out of the way.

However, restricted budgets mean this isn’t possible so rather select a window or two as your emergency exits and fit these windows with burglar proofing.

If you’re only replacing one fixed burglar bar unit with one that opens as an emergency exit, your supplier should be able to match the new burglar proofing to the old using the same powder coating.

In this case, it wouldn’t matter that the styles are different as the new unit would blend in colour-wise.

Teaching your children about the emergency escape

once your emergency escape window has been fitted, show your children and child minder how to use it.  They also need to understand that the window is for emergency situations only and not for game-playing.
