Buyer demand in Johannesburg’s tree-lined suburb of Oaklands remains robust among a broad range of buyers from young professionals and starter couples to families and empty nesters.

Adrienne Hersch Properties area experts Dianne Kinross and Zal Goldberg, attribute the suburb’s popularity to its unbeatable location close to Rosebank, Killarney, Melrose, Norwood and Sandton.

“This established suburb offers a quiet lifestyle close to Johannesburg’s major business, shopping and entertainment hubs.”

Established in 1896, Oaklands is one of Johannesburg’s oldest suburbs. The area boasts a mix of properties from large freestanding homes with big gardens to cluster homes, townhouses and modern apartment developments.

This two bedroom, two bathroom apartment is close to Oaklands Shopping Centre and offers open-plan living, a sunny aspect and two patios. It is on the market for R2.199 million - click here to view.

A number of new residential developments have emerged in the suburb in recent years to cater for growing buyer demand of secure cluster-style developments including The H, a contemporary boutique development offering residents an ideal lock-up-and-go lifestyle.

Kinross says the suburb’s appeal is further enhanced by the highly popular Oaklands Shopping Centre, which boasts an array of amenities including renowned restaurants Tortellini D’Oro and Migali, a café-style restaurant and bakery serving breakfast and lunch. Other shops at the centre include a Sorbet beauty salon, the Oaklands Fruit Shop, Oaklands Butchery, Cabeli Hair Salon, Odizee Gifts and an optometrist.

Goldberg says Oaklands is also well-placed close to major arterial routes, top schools including St Mary’s, St John’s College, King Edward VII School, King David Linksfield and Roedean and Kingsmead, as well as places of worship including Great Park Synagogue, Houghton Masjid West Street and St Luke’s Anglican Church.

This three bedroom duplex in a new development of only 12 homes, offers top quality finishes, floor-to-ceiling windows, double volume spaces and more. It is selling for R6.95 million - click here to view.

The suburb is also within walking distance of James and Ethel Gray Park.

The pair say another attraction to the area is its proximity to the Houghton Golf Course as well as popular Grant Avenue in Norwood which offers an array of restaurants, boutique-style stores and specialty shops.

Buyers can expect to pay between R4 million and R12 million for a freestanding four- or five-bedroom home depending on size, features and finishes. A four-bedroom cluster home sells for between R6 million and R 11 million. A three-bedroom townhouse can fetch between R2.3 million and R6.5 million. A two-bedroom townhouse costs anywhere between R1.9 million and R3 million, while a one-bedroom townhouse or apartment costs between R1.4 million and R1.9 million.
