Investors take note: Exciting array of property on auction 1 Nov

26 Oct 2017

A century-old Sir Herbert Baker-designed hunting lodge in the heart of Inanda, a mine shaft and compound in Soweto owned by an anti-Apartheid activist that was used to train struggle veterans, two cemeteries, two shopping centres, prime industrial and residential land, office buildings and strategically-located warehouses, a country estate and a holiday resort are among the weird and wonderful auction lots on offer on 1 November  2017.

High Street Auctions Lead Auctioneer and Director, Joff van Reenen, says this will arguably be the most interesting and diverse mixed-use sale the specialist property auction house has ever conducted, or indeed South Africa has ever seen.

“Until mid-2017 there had never been a private cemetery auctioned in this country, and on November 1 we are selling two. I believe we’re also making history with Shaft 17, auctioning a property that contains a substantial mine shaft,” he says.

“And keeping with the theme of mining, one of the crown jewels of this auction is without doubt the magnificent Cape Dutch-style Inanda House opposite Inanda Country Club in Forrest Road that was built in 1902 for the Commissioner of Mines, Winfred Wybergh, as a hunting lodge.”

Van Reenen says emerging property funds will be extremely interested in the Komatipoort Spar Centre in Mpumalanga, as well as the Murrayfield Mixed Use Retail Centre in Tshwane. He believes the auction’s prime commercial and industrial lots will also see competitive bidding.

Some of the catalogue highlights for the November 1 sale are:

1. Shaft 17

This is an unprecedented 31ha development opportunity with exposure to the Soweto Highway, known as Shaft 17. This property already has numerous businesses and sources of income, including conference facilities with accommodation for up to 500 guests, gym facilities, a spaza shop, recreational hall, kitchen and dining hall and ample parking.

There is also an on-site training facility for construction students, electrical courses and sustainable farming, as well as an organic farm that has been selling fresh produce for a number of years.

2. Komatipoort Spar Centre

The vitally located Komatipoort Spar Centre services a thriving community only 3km from the Lebombo Border Post to Mozambique and 8km from the Kruger National Park. The centre boasts a broad cross-border customer base, and Komatipoort is a central customs and railway hub for the region.

Komatipoort Spar Centre has been operating for 19 years and offers variety and convenience to the fast-growing town. Anchored by the well-established Super Spar, the 9 611sqm centre has 33 stores, enjoys 100% occupancy and tenants include Capitec, CNA, a Post Office, Vodashop, Ackermans, OK Furniture, Buco Hardware, Wimpy and the Department of Home Affairs.

The magnificent Inanda House is situated on more than 3 000sqm of land in Sandton, dubbed “Africa’s Richest Square Mile”. The Sir Herbert Baker house is built around a central courtyard graced by an elegant fountain and boasts exceptional original features, including yellowwood floors, five wood-surround fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, a romantic main suite with bay window opening onto a patio overlooking the fish pond, a guest wing, a separate one bedroom cottage and a heated swimming pool. The sprawling, elegant manor and cottage comprise nearly 900sqm.

Van Reenen says pre-registration for the auction at Summer Place in Hyde Park that starts at noon on November 1 has been vigorous and he expects this sale to be “one of the most exciting of the year”.
