The Riverine Forests are of an ecologically sensitive nature. These particular Forests present the best preserved and largest braided Riverine Forest in South Africa.
From an ecological point of view, this environment provides a number of habitats to a wide diversity of fauna and
flora. Wild Rivers is part of the 12 000 ha Blyde-Olifants Conservancy which teems with Plains Game, Leopard, Hyena, Kudu, Giraffe, Squirrel, Zebra and of course the rivers are well populated with Hippo and Crocodiles. Elephant and Lion also freely traverse the Reserve. Wild Rivers is also home to the rare Pels Fishing Owl and is a protective breeding site for Herons.
