Hermanus is situated on the South Coast only 120 km (± 75 miles) – an hour’s scenic drive from Cape Town and only 105 km from Cape Town International Airport with a regular shuttle service. It is a charming seaside town, famous for its unique whale watching, 15 kilometers of cliff paths from where you can watch these denizens of the deep frolicking in the shallows of Walker Bay
Hermanus has grown from a rustic old fishermen’s village to being acknowledged by the World Wildlife Foundation as one of the twelve best places in the world to view whales. From its rocky cliffs, whales can be seen from as close as 10 metres away. Not only that, but it is the only place in the world where you can watch the whales and, with sonar link up, hear their calls at the same time.
The South Right whales start arriving in Walker Bay from June and leave again by December. However, the peak whale season, when sightings are guaranteed on a daily basis, is during September and October. Breeding season is August and September and the whale population peaks in Walker Bay during October.
We boast beautiful walks in the mountain amongst indigenous flowers such as proteas and fynbos. Hermanus is also very popular for abalone, crayfish and deep sea diving, paragliding, home crafts and wine tasting (there are many premier wine estates in the area). Excellent restaurants from sea front bistros, quaint fisherman’s cottages to the more upmarket. Every September we host a Whale Festival which surpasses records each year and bring visitors from all over the world.
