Upmarket homes in scenic surroundings at the Bronkhorstpruit dam are favourites among buyers in the bustling Gauteng town.

Koos Pretorius, owner ofthe RealNet Kungwini franchise says accommodation is at a premium due to coal mining operations and construction of the Kusile power station nearby.

He says there is a strong demand for homes at all price levels and the market around the dam is no exception but property in the "crown jewel of upmarket estates" - the Aqua Vista Mountain Estate - is doing particularly well.

With home prices ranging from R3 milllion to R5.4 million, the estate offers 300 units and Pretorius says it draws sophisticated buyers. The split between permanent residents and weekend visitors is about even and both categories are drawn by the country atmosphere coupled with modern conveniences.

Buyers who make Aqua Vista their permanent base are mostly professional people transferred to the area, while weekend buyers come from surrounding city areas, with a particularly strong contingent from the East Rand because the dam is close enough for a convenient weekend away.

Pretorius says rental units in the estate are also in demand among professionals on long contracts at Kusile. "Many of them are on five-year contracts and have relocated their families for the duration."
