The supply of water to several suburbs will be affected by planned upgrades of the infrastructure being undertaken by Joburg Water.
There will be interruptions in the water supply until the first week of December as Joburg Water continues its infrastructure renewal programme, which involves replacing old pipes.
This programme deals with upgrading water infrastructure, sewer networks and wastewater treatment works.
Joburg Water has earmarked R5-billion over the next five years for the programme, to reduce the incidence of pipe bursts and ensure improvements to the level of service, says Baldwin Matsimela, the utility's communication and marketing manager.
Joburg Water is a municipal-owned entity, responsible for distributing water and managing sanitation services.
Rosebank and Houghton, in the northeast, have had a shortage of water - or no water at all - over the past three days as a result of the upgrades and some complications, including a faulty valve. The water in this area will be turned on at 2 pm on 26 November, says Matsimela. There are mobile water tankers in the suburbs, and a permanent one stationed at the Rosebank Clinic.
Other interruptions are scheduled for 1 December in Sundowner Extension 2, Orange Farm, Northriding, Poortjie, Blairgowrie and Sandton. Beverly Extension 1, parts of Blairgowrie, Glenhazel, and parts of Orange Farm will be affected on 2 December.
There will be interruptions in the supply of water to Ferndale, Strydompark, Fountainbleu, Sandhurst and Wynberg on 3 December. For more information regarding affected areas contact 011 688 1500 or visit the Service alerts on the Joburg website. - by Romaana Naidoo
