In 2010, millions of people in over 128 countries across the planet switched their electricity off at 8:30pm local time - making it the biggest Earth Hour ever!
People across the globe united in their stand against climate change by switching lights off in houses, towns and cities, as Earth Hour continued its way across the timeline. Iconic buildings and landmarks in London, Sydney and across the Asia Pacific and Americas all switched off.
This year, Earth Hour organiser the World Wildlife Fund is hoping to break that record - but they need your help!
What do I do?
1. Switch off
When the clock strikes Earth Hour at 8:30pm on Saturday, March the 26th, simply switch all your lights off for 60 minutes.
2. Register with Earth Hour
Make sure you sign up! Tracking the number of people switching off proves how many people care.
3. Spread the word
Ask your friends, work colleagues and family members if they are participating in Earth Hour. Email your friends across the world, let everyone know you’ll be switching off.
4. Get together on the night with friends
Invite your friends around for a candle-lit gathering, or organise an eco-friendly party with acoustic music, organic food, natural lighting and a woodfire braai.
5. Hold a neighbourhood event
Share Earth Hour with your community by holding a candle-lit picnic, lantern parade, locally-sourced dinner, or simply go star gazing.
6. Take it beyond the hour
This year, WWF are encouraging people to take their action against climate change beyond Earth Hour. Visit the Beyond the Hour website for tips on how to make our world a better place and how to share your acts with the world.
