Waterberry Heights, a student village in Potchefstroom that is close to North West University has seen an unprecedented level of interest with 102 units being sold so far even though the development was launched in January this year.

The single 37sqm unit sells for R383k while a slightly larger 44 sqm unit is priced at R438k.

According to Lane van der Merwe of Pam Golding Properties, Waterberry Heights has seen an exceptional response from buyers who are able to purchase a 30 sqm flat for R380k.

“There is a huge demand for student accommodation in Potchefstroom mainly from buy-to-let investors who are able to let out the flats for about R2,5k a month to students at the university,” says Van der Merwe.

WaterberryHeightsis 1,4 km from the main campus and all student activities. Each unit comprises fixtures and fittings that include granite kitchen tops, tiled living areas, kitchen and bathroom with carpeted bedrooms.

“Students renting these flats are able to live in a secure environment while the site plan includes various relaxation areas such as braai facilities. The university itself offers a host of sports facilities including an Olympic sized swimming pool,” says Van der Merwe

The development consists of two phases with 230 units in phase one. According to Van der Merwe the bulk of the units have been bought by buy-to-let investors or by parents for their children who are studying at the ‘varsity. Levies for the units are currently R300 a month.

Eventually there will be 69 blocks of flats each comprising ten units. Provision is being made for wireless access routers for Internet access to groups of ten in each block at a low additional cost to residents in each block. A shuttle service to and from the university is also being considered.
