Antonella Dési speaks to Lecia de Waal from local wall sticker supplier, De Waal Art, about these wonderful stickers:

Q: What are your stickers made out of?
A: The stickers are made of self-adhesive, high quality vinyl.

Q: What do they adhere to?
A: They can be used on any smooth surfaces; such as walls, doors, cupboards, mirrors, windows, and so on.

Q: What colours and sizes do they come in?
A: They are available in practically any conceivable colour or size – even in gold and silver.

Q: How long will they last for?
A: They will last for about three years, depending on the treatment and location.

Q: Can you customise these stickers or create custom designs? If so, how - must the client send you an image and if so, in what format?
A: I love to do custom designed stickers. The client can either send me the artwork, or I can design something specifically for them to suit their specific requirements and space. All designs on my website can also be altered into any required size. I am always open to new ideas and influences.

Q: Do you design all of the stickers yourself?
A: Yes, all the designs are my own.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
A: I draw inspiration from the challenge to change everyday things into something special and beautiful. My main aim is to try and take the seriousness out of decorating and put some fun into it!

Q: Can these stickers be applied in a DIY fashion, and if so, please can you provide me step-by-step instruction on how to do it?
A: The stickers are very easy to apply yourself – here is how:
1. First, choose the design by measuring your space and then decide where you want to adhere it.
2. It is important to choose a smooth surface; otherwise the vinyl will make air bubbles or will not stick properly. Walls, mirrors, glass doors and windows, cupboard doors, tiled walls and even smooth ceilings are good surfaces.
3. It is vital that the surface you choose is completely dust free. This you can be achieved by simply wiping it with a dry cloth.
4. Now, you can start by slowly peeling away the backing of the sticker, and start sticking it onto the wall.
5. Start from one side and the work your way through to the other side, slowly peeling the backing off as you go along.
6. Finally, use a credit card covered with a soft cloth to smooth out all air bubbles.

Q: How much do the stickers cost?
A: Cost is subject to size and colour choice, but for example, the chandelier sticker featured alongside for example, which measures 60cm by 60cm, costs R249,00.

Q: Why are these stickers a better option than say painting the design directly onto a wall/object?
A: I do hand painted murals as well, so would not say that the stickers are necessarily a better option, but it is definitely cheaper and is accessible to people staying in remote areas. So instead of having someone traveling all the way to do a mural for you, you can just order the sticker and do it yourself. - Antonella Dési
