Gone are the days when bathrooms were monochromatic and clinical rooms, with no character or warmth. Today’s best-dressed bathrooms comprise layers of luxurious textures and rich colour palettes that are as alluring as they are interesting. Point in case is this glamorous bathroom created by Bathroom Bizarre – it holds just the right balance of elegance and glamour, while still remaining unique and inviting.
Says Jasmin Kraneveldt from Bathroom Bizarre: “The inspiration for this bathroom was found in the vibrant history of the Sophiatown culture during the 1940s and 1950s. This inspiration is clearly depicted in the choice of block-mounted wallpaper that has been included in this room – it features a collage of different black-and-white press photos, including various glamour shots of curvaceous African women, combined with images typical of the life and times of the ‘40s and ‘50s.
"In its heyday, Sophiatown was a vibrant, creative and multicultural society, and it is these qualities that have been incorporated into this bathroom design in an updated, modern and sophisticated manner.”
A rich colour palette
Supremely glamorous and elegant, this bathroom features a dazzling colour scheme comprising a combination of purple, black, silver and grey. It’s a sensationally edgy mix that is as alluring and inviting, as it is sophisticated. A grey-blue colour, called Overcast Days by Plascon, has been used for the majority of wall space in this room – for a clean and sleek appearance that beautifully offsets the stainless steel faucets and features throughout the room. A feature wall was created using a plum colour, called Mardi-Gras by Plascon, to lift the space and add some visual interest and warmth to the composition.
A glamorous centerpiece
As with all the sanitaryware and tiles featured throughout this bathroom, the elegant free-standing skirted bath is central to this alluring bathroom space, and is made from sanitaryware-grade, cross-linked cast acrylic. This material boasts exceptional durability and heat-retaining qualities, it is also stain- and scratch-resistant and it is a material that is very easy to keep clean. The Ottawa bath can be plain or the skirted version can be jetted if so desired. With its chrome finish and sexy curves, the Isca Lesina free-standing bath mixer and hand shower is the ideal complement to any free-standing bath. Operation is effortless via a single lever switch and it is SABS-approved for guaranteed optimum performance and durability.
Double trouble
The luxurious double shower features modern chrome free-standing shower consuls for an extremely comfortable experience – the showerhead, hand shower and integrated body jets each have their own controlling tap. The thermostatic controller regulates the hot water supply, and the two integrated body jets allow for an all-over body shower. The hand shower unit allows the user to direct the water exactly where needed.
Frameless 1700 – 1900 Duo in-line glass shower doors provide a seamless aesthetic, which is aided by the fact that the Black Lava polished porcelain tiles have been carried through from the floor and onto the shower walls. These tiles have been complemented using R01 mosaics, which is a combination of metallic silver glass and genuine stainless steel mosaics. The Black Lava tiles feature subtle chocolate veins running through the black colour of the tile, which breaks the black and picks up nicely on the featured Walnut-coloured bathroom cabinets.
The central pillar
The centre pillar featured behind the bath has also been tiled in Black Lava tiles to create a lovely contrast between the painted matt walls.
The pillar serves to break up the various bathroom spaces – with the shower on the right, the basins on the left, and the bath standing pride of place in front of it. Cleverly, it features a built-in shelf, which is a very practical space for when you are bathing – as it provides somewhere where you can store your toiletries and soaps. It has been lit using LED strip lighting in a cool white with a crisp, bluish tone. LED lighting comprises a thin strip with built-in LED lights with a very narrow profile, making it ideal for this kind of application.
Form and function
Boasting clean lines and an elegantly modern aesthetic, two compact La Paz wall-hung units are featured in this bathroom. They boast an American Walnut finish, two flip-open doors and a square, built-in white acrylic basin. Each basin features a Latina basin mixer, which boasts equally contemporary lines, as well as a Trend mirror unit for added storage in a matching American Walnut finish.
A Trend tall-wall unit in a corresponding American Walnut finish has been mounted on the wall alongside the shower for added storage. It is neighboured by the Loft Twin six-bar heated towel rail, which boasts an elegant polished chrome finish, and it runs on an impressively energy efficient 75 Watts. On the opposite side of the bathroom, the square-shaped Ragona wall-hung toilet has been positioned in its own nook for added privacy. Ambient lighting has been created using sunken spots, while decorative lighting has been included with the inclusion of the metallic silver Chopin pendant light fitting from The Lighting Warehouse.
Jasmin concludes: “This bathroom is a fusion of glamour and style, with an added modern twist – bringing the vibrancy of some of our South African heritage into play. A gorgeous space – it is stylish and trendy, while still remaining the quintessential epitome of bathroom luxury and indulgence!” – Antonella Desi
