The South African total income for the accommodation industry for the third quarter of 2011 decreased by 1.2 percent compared with Q3 2010.

According to the Tourist Accommodation September 2011 report released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), the total income for the accommodation industry in September 2011 increased by 7.5 percent.

The report reveals that income from accommodation for the third quarter of 2011 decreased by 7.0 percent due to a decrease of 1.8 percent in the number of stay unit nights sold and a decrease of 5.3 percent in the average income per stay unit night sold.

The number of stay units available for the third quarter of 2011 decreased by 1.9 percent compared to the same period in 2010 and the number of stay units available in September 2011 decreased by 1.4 percent.

Income from accommodation for the third quarter of 2011 decreased by 7.0 percent and the decrease recorded for hotels accounted -11.2 percent and contributing -8.0 percentage points was marginally counteracted by the increases recorded for guest houses and guest farms (15.1 percent and contributing 0.9 of a percentage point) and caravan parks and camping sites (37.5 percent and contributing 0.2 of a percentage point).

The main contributor to the year-on-year increase of 5.1 percent in income from accommodation for September 2011 was other accommodation (9.9 percent and contributing 2.2 percentage points), followed by guest houses and guest farms (28.5 percent and contributing 1.8 percentage points) and hotels (1.8 percent and contributing 1.2 percentage points).
