It is owned by Johannesburg Stock Exchange listed hotels, gaming and entertainment group, Tsogo Sun Holdings.
Of the 12 storeys, five are allocated specifically to convention, exhibition, and event space.
These five floors measure 22 000 square metres and are designed to enable multiple events to be held simultaneously, accommodating up to 10 000 visitors at any one time, explains Mati Nyazema, the centre executive director.
She explains that parking is available in the centre as well as in surrounding parking lots such as Sandton City - meaning it is surrounded by close to 11 000 parking bays in three multi-storey parkades.
The centre is located between the Sandton Sun, Intercontinental Sandton Towers and the Garden Court Sandton City hotels, all Tsogo Sun properties.
She says this makes it easier and convenient for visitors wanting accommodation as all three hotel properties offer 1 000 rooms with the added ease of access via skywalks in the Sandton node.
A further 16 hotels are within a relaxed and comfortable walking distance, along with a five minute walk to the Sandton Gautrain Station.
“Far from competing for events, synergies are created between the different Tsogo Sun properties to ensure a holistic offering of accommodation, event venue, entertainment, restaurants, and other facilities for all visitors of the Convention Centre.”
The centre, which opened in 2000, hosts over 500 000 local and international visitors annually.
It features simple, uncluttered interior finishes that form the perfect background to the beautiful collection of authentic southern African art.
Over a hundred pieces are on display on the public levels, by famous names such as Noria Mabasa and Jackson Hlongwane, providing an overview of contemporary southern African art and traditional craftwork.
“These artworks are a showcase of our rich and varied heritage and a celebration of African expression and creativity.”
Nyazema says the centre is purpose-designed and built to international standards as a dedicated venue for hosting world class events of any size and stature.
As such, it is the leading events venue in Africa, with a highly skilled team that is equipped to manage any and every event, as well as state-of-the-art technology facilities throughout the venue.
“With this enviable pedigree, the centre retains its clientele through excellence in service and facility offerings.”
Much of the centre’s annual programme of events comes from repeat business from highly satisfied clientele and this year is set to be yet another busy time, she says.
In 2012, she says their biggest events include the Global Africa Diaspora Summit, which was held in May, attracting 500 delegates including head of states from 14 countries, ministers and other dignitaries from 69 countries.
Popular US musician John Legend delighted fans in August as well as the Discovery Leadership Summit, which provides a platform for global thought leadership on issues relating to business, economics, government and leadership.
“Our daily vision is to be Africa’s preferred property venue, providing a platform that inspires progressive thinking, new ideas, and innovative solutions to local and global issues, while ensuring that every encounter with clients and guests is professional, friendly, and value-adding.”- Denise Mhlanga
