The ruling ANC has congratulated the eThekwini Municipality for writing-off R98-million in rent arrears at nine hostels and spokesman James Nxumalo says that this will ease the economic burden of the people in the city.

“This will allow each one of them to start on a clean slate and restore their dignity,” he says. “We urge all residents of the hostels to continue to co-operate with municipal officials by signing lease agreements and paying their rent,” says Nxumalo.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the SA Municipal Workers’ Union are to hold a march against corruption in Klerksdorp on Friday.

The activists want to expose the widespread corruption in municipalities in the North West Province and the failure, by the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sicelo Shiceka, to release a report on corruption in the province.

Cosatu spokesman, Patrick Craven said: “On October 22 the streets of Klerksdorp will be brought to a halt as Cosatu and Samwu members and other trade unionists from all over the country sing and toyi-toyi to expose rampant corruption.”
