On Saturday the 10th November, Susan Watts, Broker/Manager of RE/MAX Living and her partner Lehan Bornman, took Cancer awareness to new heights as they jumped from an aeroplane to raise funds for this year’s Movember campaign.
“As women we have to deal with our man’s extremelyhairy upper lip each November. We simply accept it as something that they need to do and wait impatiently till month end when they can shave it off – hopefully," says Watts.
Movember may be the month of ridiculous moustaches and a tirade of jokes, but it is, most importantly, to raise awareness on how cancer can affect anyone, and encourage men to keep an eye on their health. "It’s amazing that something as simple as growing a moustache can raise awareness and make men more health conscious and encourage them to get checked out regularly to ensure that they are cancer free and healthy.”
Watts says she knew little about the campaign and its reasons but once she learnt more about it, she felt that she needed to do her part. Having taken up skydiving this year, she decided it could be great to merge her passion with the worthy cause. “Skydiving is about making every second in this life count and at the RE/MAX Living office, there are many agents who take the Movember campaign very seriously because cancer has had an effect in their personal lives and they want to make a difference,” says Watts.
One agent in particular, Petrick Fourie, is involved and participates in raising funds through the ‘Movember and Sons’ website. He believes every person can make a difference in some way.
Fellow skydiver and photographer, Lehan Bornman, provided the images which raised the funds. They exited the plane and fell at terminal velocity wearing fake moustaches. “It was definitely an experience to deal with the logistics of a stick-on Moustache at 120mph,” says Watts, adding that this jump was different, as it was not for her personal experience but also to help with a good cause.
"It was a great team effort that I could not have done without Lehan, who is the behind the scenes man who does a tremendous amount for our brand. We would gladly do it again and all the men out there can count on us to help raise funds again next Movember.”
Watts managed to raise her target amount of R2 000 and all funds were donated to the ‘Movember and Sons’ South Africa Campaign.
She says at RE/MAX Living they love to participate in campaigns such as this and they believe they have a role to play in helping to build the community and give back. "We take our philosophy "we don't just work here, we live here too" very seriously."
It is this attention to all aspects of their business, clients and their area that have helped them to become the largest real estate office in the area and their attitude certainly contributes to their success. "From sales, to rentals to concerts in De Waal Park to, local school support, to neighbourhood watch initiatives to Movember campaigns and more … we love to be of service,” says Watts.
