A luxury hotel, a spa and eventually also villas will be built at Johannesburg's biggest golf club, the Rand Park club near the Cresta shopping centre in Windsor Glen.

Kosie Pansegrouw, Guvon Hotels' managing director, and Leigh Hindshaw, a director of the Plumari Group, signed a joint concession to build and manage the R100m hotel.

The Plumari Group bought land in Rand Park several years ago with the aim to develop it. Leigh says the group wanted to get involved in the tourism and leisure industry.

Plumari approached Pansegrouw to partner with them due to the fact that Guvon Hotels already owns and manages hotels in nearby Muldersdrift and Honeydew. "Rand Park is the ideal location for a luxurious hotel of this nature. It's also our first city hotel," Pansegrouw says.

The hotels will be hosting conferences and weddings. The new chapel makes provision for 120 guests and golf tournaments will also be held in future.

The project will be completed in two phases.

The first phase of the 8,200sq m hotel will be built north-east of the first hole. This phase will include a large foyer, private courtyard with swimming pool, conference centre, living room and a sundeck with a beautiful view.

Phase one also includes a bar, restaurant and a complete health spa.

Wynand du Plessis, director of the architect firm DBM, says the appearance will be contemporary African and blend in with the recently-refurbished clubhouse.

Phase two will include 14 luxury golf villas on a building surface of 2,200sq m.

Douglas Bain, manager of the Rand Park golf club, says members are in favour of the development because of the new dimension it lends to the club.

The club and hotel will be managed separately.

Councillor Laurette van Zijl says it concerns her that the service entrance is situated on a corner as this is unsafe. She's also worried that a busy service road in Arend Road will have an adverse impact on the quiet neighbourhood.

Christa van der Merwe, group marketing manager of Guvon Hotels, says ground will be broken next month and they hope to finish the development within a year in order to benefit from the Soccer World Cup. - Marí Pieterse, Wes-Beeld
