A R200m housing development project was launched in Mafikeng Extension 39 on Friday.
The Finance Linked Subsidy Programme (Flips) was launched to cater for income earners between R3,500 and R7k.
811 houses, comprising of two to four bedrooms ranging from R120k to R300k, will be built over two years.
The housing delivery plan, named Breaking New Ground, seeks to eradicate informal settlements and create vibrant and sustainable settlements with amenities on well-located land.
The plan dictates that housing must be in a sustainable environment that enhances the quality of life so that communities enjoy secure tenure and can access basic services such as water, sanitation, healthcare, education and transportation.
"We are breaking new ground by offering diversified housing in new shapes, new sizes and choice of colours," says North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa.
"The Housing Developments in Extension 38 commonly known as Imperial Reserve and here in Extension 39 portrays that the plan is a shift from a one-size-fits-all approach in housing, to promoting racial and class integration through mixed income and mixed tenure human settlements."
He said he was confident the houses would meet the expectations and needs of people earning between R3,500 to R7k.
The project is a public private partnership between the Department of Developmental Local Government and Housing, Mafikeng Local Municipality and ilima Real Estate Pty Ltd as turnkey developer.
Government's contribution, in the form of subsidies for the beneficiaries of the housing development based on the flips scale, amounts to R30m. - BuaNews
