Construction will begin on the Bendor Integrated and Sustainable Human Settlement project in the suburb of Bendor in Polokwane next week.
The Limpopo Department of Local Government and Housing will hold a sod-turning ceremony on Tuesday to symbolise the start of the construction phase.
The project will address the challenge of housing affordability by ensuring that mixed-income earners are housed together and nearer to town in what is popularly referred to as an inclusionary housing project, the department said on Monday.
Particularly targeting the market dominated by teachers, nurses and police officers, the project forms part of the province's efforts to reduce congested accommodation and eradicate informal settlements.
"It will contribute immensely to our commitment to resolve the housing backlog in the province, while accommodating mixed-income earners in a single sustainable settlement closer to places that offer better economic opportunities," MEC Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said.
The criterion for eligible beneficiaries is set to be outlined during the ceremony, he said.
The department said it has put various measures in place to ensure spatial restructuring and to make aggressive inroads into the space economy.
Furthermore, the department said plans are in place to support the functioning of the entire single residential property market in order to reduce duality within the sector by breaking the barriers between the first economy residential boom and the second economy doom.
This approach is informed the department's policy directive, Breaking New Ground.
The primary goal of the policy is to create a human settlement where proper facilities shall be provided for transport, lighting, playing fields, crèches and social centres.
According to the department this approach will assist in building a non-racial integrated society in line with the vision of the freedom charter.
"It is beyond question that the fundamental challenge confronting the objective of attaining integrated sustainable human settlements is the location of subsidised low cost housing developments."
The project is expected to be extended to other towns in the province including Mokopane, Phalaborwa, Tubatse and Lephalale. – Bathandwa Mbola, BuaNews
