Land redistribution in South Africa has been slow at only 8 percent of the government’s target of 30 percent by 2014.
This is according to President Jacob Zuma in his State of the Nation Address in Parliament last Thursday.
“We have only distributed 8 percent of the 30 percent target of land redistribution for 2014 that we set ourselves.”
He said the process is slow and tedious and there is general agreement that the willing buyer willing seller option has not been the best way to address this question
This comes as 2013 marks the centenary of the Natives Land Act of 1913, which took away 87 percent of the land from the African people.
At the beginning of December 2011, the Department of Rural Development extended the consultation process on the Green Paper on Land Reform to the end of 2011.
Initially the paper, which seeks to break from the past without significantly disrupting agricultural production and food security, was due to be concluded at the end of November 2011
“We urge the public to participate in the process of improving land redistribution and reform to reverse the impact of the 1913 Act,” said Zuma. - BuaNews
