Here are some home cleaning tips that show how natural cleaning products really do work and they won't harm your health or your family in the process.
Use natural cleaning products to clean a grease stained stove top or remove hard water stains in the bathroom. With a list of natural cleaning products you’ll be able to tackle just about any household grime.
Grease stained stove top
If you are renting a home, especially an older home, you invariably end up with a lot of cleaning to do when you move in. And bathrooms and kitchens are the hardest rooms to get really clean.
If you want to get a stove top clean, mix baking soda in a small bowl with enough hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Apply the paste to the dirty areas and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
Pop on some rubber gloves and use a kitchen scourer to gently rub off the dirt.
Hard water stains
Hard water stains can be difficult to remove with everyday cleaning products. However, lemon can get rid of those stains.
All you need to do is rub the lemon on the fixture and rinse, then watch the spots disappear.
For hard water stains that have been there for years, you may have to do this more than once.
Make your own bathroom cleaner as an alternative to bought cleaners. Fill up a spray bottle half with white spirit vinegar and half with water, and add 10 drops of tea tree oil to keep mould at bay.
Burnt pots and pans
If you’ve ever forgotten a pot on the stove, you know how difficult it can be to get it clean.
However, if you pop in some water and vinegar into the pot before letting it sit for a few minutes on the stove it’s an easy job .
For burns that have been left for a while, pour in a cup of white spirit vinegar, add a small amount of water - about 5mm - and place the pan on the stove.
Bring it to the boil and remove the pan from the heat and add two tablespoons of baking soda. This will immediately begin to fizz, which means the baking soda is working to break down the greasy burn marks. All that is left is to rinse the pot clean.
Any stubborn stains left behind can be removed by making a paste with baking soda and water and using a scouring pad.
Ugly toilet stains
Over time, toilets that have been left standing unused may develop brown stains around the bowl and at the bottom.
These water stains can be easily removed by sprinkling baking soda inside the bowl and scrubbing it with white spirit vinegar.
Stains and odours from the fridge or freezer
We’ve all experienced a smelly fridge at one time or another. The easiest way to clean a fridge or freezer and deodorise it at the same time is to make up a cleaning paste with baking soda and a small amount of water.
Use a sponge to wipe down the interior of the fridge with the paste, and then wipe the fridge clean with a cloth. Finish off with a microfibre cloth to remove any remaining traces of moisture.
If you need to remove odours from a fridge, fill a cup half way with baking soda and let it stand in the fridge until the odour disappears.
Blocked or smelly drains
Don't leave this natural cleaning treatment until you have a blockage. If you use baking soda and vinegar once a month in your sinks and basins, you will prevent any build up that may cause a blockage and have odour-free drains.
Sprinkle the baking soda down the drain and then pour in the vinegar. The drain will start to fizz as the ingredients combine.
Besides clearing blockages, this technique also washes away odour-causing bacteria.
Manufacturers of cleaning products have a monopoly over what goes on the supermarket shelves, but there are more natural and eco-friendly cleaners available.
The downside is that these products can be more expensive. However, there is a simple and inexpensive way to make your own natural cleaners at home and you don't have to buy a bunch of fancy ingredients to do it.
Simply stock up on white spirit vinegar, castille soap, baking soda, and a few essential oils, and you will be able to make just about every cleaner you will ever need.
Not only will your home be naturally clean, you will also be putting less plastic packaging onto our dumps and reducing your toxic footprint.
