With so many people trying to step away from harsh household cleaning products, here are a few tips for cleaning grease-stained stove tops or removing hard water stains in the bathroom with natural products that do work.
Cleaning a grease stained stove top
If you are renting a home, especially an older home, you invariably end up with a lot of cleaning to do when you move in. Bathrooms and kitchens are the hardest rooms to get clean.
If you want to get a stove top clean, mix baking soda in a small bowl with enough hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Apply the paste to the dirty areas and leave on for about 10 minutes. Be sure to put on some rubber gloves and then use a kitchen scourer to gently rub clean.
Hard water stains on fittings in bathrooms and showers
Water stains can be difficult to remove with everyday cleaning products but for hard water stains in the bathroom, all you need are a couple of lemons. Simply rub the lemon on the fixture and rinse.
For hard water stains that have been there for years, you may have to do this more than once.
You can also make your own bathroom cleaner as an alternative to bought cleaners by filling up half a spray bottle with white spirit vinegar and half with water, adding 10 drops of tea tree oil to keep mould at bay.
Clean burnt pots and pans
If you have ever left a pot on the stove and forgotten about it, you know how difficult it can be to remove burn stains from the bottom. If you pour in some water and vinegar and put the pot back on the stove to simmer for a bit, it's easy to remove burns.
For burns that have been left for a while, pour in a cup of white spirit vinegar, add 5 mm of water and place the pan on the stove. Bring it to the boil and then remove the pan from the heat and add 2 tablespoons of baking soda. It will immediately begin to fizz, which means the baking soda is working to break down the greasy burn marks. Then rinse it clean.
Tip: Any stubborn stains left behind can be removed by making a paste with baking soda and water and scrubbing with a scouring pad.
Remove ugly toilet stains
In a rented home, or where the toilet has been left standing unused for a while, you may find brown stains around the bowl and at the bottom, which no one wants. These water stains can be removed by sprinkling the toilet with baking soda and scrubbing with white spirit vinegar.
Remove stains and odours from fridge or freezer
We have all experienced a smelly fridge at one time or another. The easiest way to clean a fridge or freezer and deodorize at the same time, is to make up a cleaning paste with baking soda and a small amount of water. Use a sponge to wipe down the interior of the fridge with the paste, and then wipe it clean with a cloth. Finish off with a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining traces of moisture.
If you need to remove odours from a fridge, fill a cup half way with baking soda and let it stand in the fridge until the odour has gone.
Clean out blocked or smelly drains
Don't leave this natural cleaning treatment until you have a blockage. If you use baking soda and vinegar once a month in your sinks and basins, you can have odour-free drains and prevent build up that can cause a blockage. Sprinkle baking soda on top of the drain and then pour in the vinegar. The drain will start to fizz as the ingredients combine.
Manufacturers of cleaning products have a monopoly over what goes on the supermarket shelves, but there are more natural and eco-friendly cleaners becoming available. The downside is these products can be more expensive.
However, there is a simple and inexpensive way to make your own natural cleaners at home and you don't have to buy a bunch of fancy ingredients to do it. Simply stock up on white spirit vinegar, castille soap, baking soda, and a few essential oils, and you will be able to make just about every cleaner you will ever need.
Not only will your home be naturally clean, you will also be putting less plastic packaging onto our dumps and reducing your toxic footprint.
