Metal leaf provides a shiny metallic finish and transforms a boring galvanised tin container into a beautiful feature.
Gilded, using a mix of copper and imitation gold leaf, this container will look gorgeous outdoors in a sunny spot and will brighten up a dull space.
You will need:
Galvanised bucket or trough
Small and medium paintbrush
Rust-Oleum chalkboard paint - or chalkboard spray paint
Copper and Dutch metal (imitation gold) leaf
Soft gilding or paintbrush
Rust-Oleum polyurethane spray varnish
Use a paintbrush to apply an even coat of chalkboard paint to the container. Don't forget to paint the inside as well. If you prefer, you can replace this with Rust-Oleum chalkboard paint. Allow paint to dry overnight.
Apply a thin layer of gold size, brushing out any air bubbles.
Wait for the size to become tacky but not dry; it's best to work on small areas at a time.
Take a sheet of copper leaf and, while the protective backing is still attached, tear off an uneven shape.
Press the leaf against the tacky size and gently rub the backing paper.
As the leaf adheres the paper will become loose and can be peeled away.
Apply more copper leaf over the container leaving random gaps of varying sizes.
Repeat the last step to fill in the gaps with Dutch metal leaf.
Use small pieces of excess leaf in copper or Dutch metal to fill the smaller gaps.
Gently brush over the top with a soft brush to remove any loose leaf.
Rub very gently over the leaf with a soft cloth to create a sheen.
Continue to gild the entire container in the same way.
Protect the container by applying two coats of Rust-Oleum satin polyurethane spray varnish.
