Prices for existing freehold homes in Gansbaai currently range from R750k to R6m.
So says Pat McCloughlin, principal of the local Chas Everitt International branch, who also points to the fact the Gansbaai economy and property market are set for a boost as the result of a proposed R100m injection by Premier Fishing into its local aquaculture project.
According to recent reports, Premier is keen to pump up production from its abalone farm in Gansbaai to about 250 tons a year within three years, to help meet growing demand for the delicacy. This comes in the wake of Government's decision last year to halt wild abalone harvesting.
However, the abalone farm is just one segment of the overall aquaculture project and it's envisaged that the immediate community will benefit greatly from new job opportunities and the spin-off demand for more accommodation.
McCloughlin says there are also plans to modernise the Gansbaai harbour area and that development along the lines of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town is planned for the Kleinbaai harbour. The Gansbaai CBD also offers development opportunities which would contribute substantially to the area's appeal.
"We don't know when this might occur, given the current state of economic affairs, but I have no doubt that it will eventually happen and, coupled with the aquaculture project will position Gansbaai for a boom."
Meanwhile, new residential development in the area has largely been put on the back burner, which is positive for existing properties, and empty stands are selling well, he says, at prices between R300k and R3m, depending on position.
