Lifestyle and wine farms for auction

20 May 2013

On 22 May, Rawson Auctions will auction a 27.8 ha smallholding at Joostenbergvlakte, just 20 minutes’ drive on the N1 from the centre of Cape Town.

The Nuwedrift and Rouxland farms are part of the Olifants River wine route and offer commercial opportunities with excellent wine producing conditions.

The auction will take place at 12pm at 222 Main Road in Rondebosch.

Although at the moment largely uncultivated, the farm could be suitable for a wide variety of uses, including a boutique winery, an exclusive sheep or cattle stud, poultry, flower growing or as an equestrian establishment, explains Tanya Jovanovski, co-franchisee principal for Rawson Auctions in the Western Cape.

“There would also be no difficulty as regards water and the farm already has irrigation equipment which, along with tractors and other agricultural implements, will be part of the overall sale.”

She says the farm has a main house with three bedrooms, a large entrance area, a living and dining room and a wine cellar as well as undercover parking for three cars.

“This type of smallholding, which could almost qualify as a gentleman’s estate, has been very much in demand recently as more and more people look for a rural lifestyle but one that is within easy driving distance of urban facilities,” says Jovanovski.

A lifestyle farm on the Garden Route is up for tender and the public has an opportunity to bid via tender for this 147ha farm - portion 2 of Lange Fonteyn - situated on the coast, a mere 6km from Gouritsmond.

Willie van Rensburg of BKB Properties says the tender closes on 29 May and tender documents are available at 294 Main Street in Paarl.

According to Van Rensburg, the Garden Route is one of the most beautiful regions in South Africa and it’s not often properties of this nature come on the market.

The farm consists of almost 650m of coastline and contains three existing plastered brick buildings and the right to build another house.

It is perfect for four couples or individuals to jointly purchase this stunningly positioned smallholding in the heart of the Garden Route.

He says it is both a special lifestyle purchase and an outstanding investment and it is situated in a safe area featuring beautiful fynbos and excellent fishing direct from the property.

Gouritsmond is about an hour’s drive from Still Bay and lies at the mouth of the Gourits River, making it a water lover’s paradise.

The inland farming areas contain mostly sheep and wheat fields and the town itself functions mainly as a holiday getaway.

“Less than four hours' drive from Cape Town and less than two hours from Knysna, it is ideal as a lifestyle choice and an investment with enormous potential,” he says.

On 23 May, two Vredendal wine farms with water listings and good infrastructure in the heart of the export farming area famous for producing exceptional noble wines will be auctioned by BKB Properties at 11am at the Vredendal Hotel.

Albie Loubser of BKB Properties says the farms are well situated, almost bordering the Western Cape and Northern Cape regions.

They offer both commercial opportunities with excellent wine producing conditions and lifestyle appeal.

“They are also well positioned to capitalise on the many travellers passing through the area.”

Vredendal is a small town in the northern Olifants River Valley in the Western Cape.

It is situated 250km north of Cape Town on the banks of the Orange River at the southern edge of Little Namaqualand.

The town is ideally situated as a base from which to explore the world-famous Namaqualand region as well as The Cape West Coast and the rugged Cederberg Mountains.

The Olifants River wine route, on which it sits, includes the large vineyards of Westcorp and Lutzville.

He adds that this area is fast gaining a reputation as one of the country’s ideal regions for wine production.
