Attending to last minute Christmas décor is a tradition on par with being fashionably late. It’s a stressful business, but what would the holidays be without a bit of anxiety?
This could all be unnerving; however, the added tension could make for a beautiful outcome – bright, festive cheer that gives nothing away about the quality of your Christmas spirit.
To make this a success you’ll need a lump sum of creativity, so here are a few ideas to get you started…
When it comes to Christmas décor, everything hinges on the existence of a Christmas tree. However, this late in the game you’ll need an alternative. Is it possible to use fallen branches and twigs as that alternative?
These may not sound like much, but once you’ve set aside a workspace and generously spray painted the branches with silver or gold you’ll change your mind.
You could also provide your tree with some extra sparkle by coating the twigs with glitter or you could opt to keep to a more traditional interpretation by spray painting the sticks white.
From there, the tree can be ‘planted’ in a complementary vase, as is or complete with your choice of Christmas trimmings.
Ornaments and accessories
Happy holidays are made out of festive accessories and families that get along.
This may be last minute, but it shouldn’t take long.
Bring in some pine cones from the side of the road and spray paint them in silver or gold. You can then dust them with a bit of glitter and cluster them in a fancy vase to use as a centrepiece.
Pine cones can also take on the life of ornaments - simply ‘pin’ holiday coloured ribbon to the end of each cone and proudly hang it on the limbs of your Christmas tree.
Festive candles and lights
Whatever ornaments and festive trinkets that haven’t been used on the tree can be tossed in a clear glass candle holder. Rooted in the centre of these should be the candle that brings about that special Christmas glow.
To create a more lively display, employee a few candle holders that vary in size, and line them along the window sill or anchor them in the centre of the dinner table.
Feel free to re-engineer this look by topping a vase with water and adding a few drops of food colouring. Place a floating candle in the vase and use this arrangement as a focal point or an accessory that complements the rest of your décor.
If the fairy lights haven’t found themselves onto the Christmas tree, string them along the walls, dangle them from the ceiling or coil them around a stand-alone object.
When you decorate a table, take direction from the rest of your interiors.
You may have not given it much forethought, so the key to pulling this off is to keep it smart and simple.
Pluck a few leaves or green stems from your plants and do away with the gnarly bits. Fish three wine glasses from your cupboard and face them upside down, over the leaves, in a cluster on the table. From here, you can place a small votive candle on the palm or base of each wine glass.
Alternatively, you could also ‘serve’ a centerpiece of ornaments and green leaves on a tray. Line a short tray with round ball ornaments and season them with fern leaves or mint or whatever green you can find.
You can add a bit of sparkle with a bit of glitter or tinsel before setting it down on the dinner table.
This last minute attempt doesn’t have to look so last minute. Just keep an open mind and let the little ones help you. – Katlego Sekano
