Over the past five years, the introduction of many large-scale, often exclusive, lifestyle developments in Knysna have been experienced.
The growth in Knysna has often been area specific, for example, a stand purchased on Thesen Islands six years ago for under R500k would now sell for over R3m - this has been driven purely by demand and building deadlines. A house in a residential area would not have achieved the same growth.
It is currently a good time to buy and with indications that many people are moving into the area, the prognosis for the property market looks good.
Knysna is one of the Southern Cape Coast's best known holiday destinations. The area offers a variety of activities and attractions, the most well-known attraction being the heads – two large sandstone cliffs guarding the mouth of the lagoon which connects the estuary with the sea.
Anytime is good for visiting the area, depending if one enjoys a peaceful retreat during the winter months or a bustling holiday destination during the summer. The Garden Route has moderately hot summers and mild chilly winters. It is one of the richest rainfall areas, most of which occurs in the winter months.
Popular activities in the area include forest tours, paragliding, deep sea fishing, hiking and foot trails, scuba diving, the oyster farm and tavern, mountain bike trails, water skiing, abseiling off the heads as well as sailing and canoeing.
"Due to Knysna's location in the Garden route and its popularity with international and local holiday visitors, Knysna will constantly have people with money passing through. As a result, property prices will always be on the high end of the scale. I believe it is safer to invest in a region such as Knysna, where there is high demand for lifestyle property," says Trevor Niksch, licensee of Fine & Country's new Knysna office opening at the end of November.
