Tillandsia's are also known as air plants as they take nutrients from the air around them and all they need is an occasional misting spray of water.
Air plants are gaining popularity as people realise how easy they are to care for and how they can be incorporated into simple décor projects. Once potted up in a handmade container, air plants make wonderful gifts.
Buy a few plants and pot them up in timber off cuts, blocks of wood or seashells.
Use a few timber off cuts to create a unique display for any room at home. Using a spade bit, drill a hole in your block of wood, as you would when making a candle holder and because these plants don't require any soil, you can place them directly into the drilled hole.
If you still have some conch shells or sea urchins lying around from your last holiday, they make stunning containers for small air plants. Add a small amount of pea gravel to the pots to add weight and support for the plants.
Air plants are simple to take care of, so you don’t need to have a green thumb. All they require is light, not direct sunlight and a spray of water every 4 to 5 days.
You can use potted air plants to dress up a plain table for a special occasion, party or wedding as these plants don't mind being moved around occasionally.
Create a natural setting with driftwood or aged timber and use it as a table centerpiece on a coffee table or mantel shelf.
There are many varieties of Tillandsia that range from small and compact, to long and graceful. Once settled in the right spot these plants will thrive and produce new plants that can be removed and potted up.
There are various suppliers where you can buy air plants, normally on an online classifieds site such as Gumtree, Junk Mail or here.
