Using a few cans of Rust-Oleum spray paint, you can give your garden furniture, flower pots and containers, rusted accessories and even wood a makeover.
Vintage patio furniture has a rustic charm that modern furniture can't compare to. It's a look that says 'I'm old and loved' so don't toss out that old metal patio set simply because it's covered in flaking paint and rust.
With Rust-Oleum you can transform old, rusty furniture into colourful, funky furniture for the garden.
Start off by sanding down the garden bench with 80-grit sandpaper to remove as much rust as possible.
If you find spots where the rust has left holes in the metal, you can fix this using Alcolin QuikSteel, which is a 2-part epoxy putty that is kneaded together and then applied to the area. It dries to a rock hard finish.
Sand any QuikSteel you have used before it sets too hard using 120-grit sandpaper to sand the epoxy putty to a smooth finish.
While you have the 120-grit sandpaper out, go over the furniture once again so that it is ready for painting and then wipe it clean to remove all traces of dust.
Tip: Place the bench on a drop cloth to protect flooring from overspray.
If you have battled with spray paint that drips and runs, or requires 4 to 5 coats to get the finish you want, Rust-Oleum is great for DIY projects.
More paint and less solvent
The spray paint goes on easily when applied properly and you only require 2 light, even coats to cover most projects.
Spray down your furniture in your chosen colour and leave it overnight to dry. Then place your refurbished, funky coloured furniture out in your garden and wait for the compliments.
