If you have tiled floors or walls, particularly light coloured tiles, you will probably notice that the grout starts to look grubby after a while.
While using a grout pen is a quick fix, there are other options for restoring tile grout for fresh looking tiles and rooms.
You can use a Dremel MultiTool (any model) with the Grout Removal Attachment. The attachment makes it easier to remove old grout from between tiles.
Tip: There are now grout sealers that you can apply to new grout to ensure that light coloured grout stays looking good for longer. You can find these in the tiling section at your local Builders Warehouse.
Use a Plascon Grout Pen to refresh dull grout lines for a temporary fix for walls and floors in your home. To ensure a long-lasting finish, wash the walls with Sugar Soap and rinse prior to application.
Grout Renu is a specially formulated chemical used to clean old, dirty grout. It is a blend of detergents, acids and thickeners that allow the product to cling to walls and floors, thereby giving the chemical time to purge dirt from the grout. The original colour of the grout will be restored.
When removing grout you only need to take off 5mm before mixing up and re-applying new grout between tiles. However, where the grout is starting to crumble, or where there are bad mould stains, it is best to remove as much grout as possible.
Use a paint scraper or palette knife to re-apply the grout. Let it dry for a few hours and then wipe with a damp cloth to remove excess grout from tiles.
When using powdered grout, mix to a thick paste that can be easily applied. Be sure to mix well to avoid lumps. Once mixed, don't add any additional water as this will cause the grout to crumble later on.
A soft, dry cloth can be used to polish the tiles and remove any remaining grout dust or haze. The, wait 24 hours and apply Grout Sealer.
