The South African total income for the accommodation industry increased by 12.8 percent in Q3 2012 and by 12.3 percent year-on-year in September.
According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), this increase was due to an increase of 8.7 percent in the number of stay unit nights sold and an increase of 3.8 percent in the average income per stay unit night sold.
Income from accommodation increased by 14.3 percent year-on-year (y/y) in September.
The number of stay units available increased by 1.8 percent in Q3 2012 compared with Q3 2011and the number of stay units available increased by 1.6 percent y/y in September 2012.
Stats SA says the number of stay unit nights sold increased by 8.7 percent in Q3 2012 while the number of stay unit nights sold increased by 6.3 percent y/y in September.
The main contributors to the y/y increase of 12.8 percent in income from accommodation for Q3 2012 were hotels (10.8 percent and contributing 7.2 percentage points) and other accommodation (16.9 percent and contributing 4.6 percentage points).
According to the report, the main contributors to the y/y increase of 14.3 percent in income from accommodation for September 2012 were hotels (13.3 percent and contributing 8.8 percentage points) and other accommodation (19.5 percent and contributing 5.3 percentage points). – Denise Mhlanga
