Host a 'swim day' party this summer

01 Mar 2013

Soon we will have to pack away our swimming costumes and pool noodles in preparation for autumn and the windy season.

Mobelli's new range of Pop Foam bags make comfortable, durable outdoor seating. The fabric is water-resistant and the colour won't fade in the sun.

So take advantage of the heat while summer is still here and make the most of your swimming pool. Spend a day outside in the sun with the kids or a group of friends, have a braai and get a natural tan while you still can.

Poolside seating

Mobelli outdoor and patio furniture have a fantastic new range of Pop Foam bags that look and feel like bean bags, but come without the fuss. They contain compressed foam that pops them into shape as you open them and ensures that they keep their shape.

Pop Foam bags are covered in waterproof fabric, making them perfect for around the pool and they can withstand wet costumes and splashes. Coming in a variety of funky colours, they will last longer than most furniture in the sun and are easy to move as they have a built-in handle. They are also far more comfortable than most patio furniture.

Make sure all the rules of swimming pool safety have been explained to the children and keep an eye on them while they play in and around the water.

Deck chairs and benches make great seating options as many of them are treated and can withstand splashes and wet costumes, as well as seat a number of people at once. Place benches around the table to ensure your guests interact and eat together.

Swim day décor

Roll up bright coloured towels and place them in pyramids on chairs next to the pool for an organised and cute look. You can use contrasting colours for a bolder look. Place a stick of sun cream next to each set of towels to encourage your guests to protect their skin.

Throw a few brightly striped, water-resistant cushions on the chairs around the table and add a coloured throw if you are using a bench. If you don't have a towel rack for outside, place any damp towels across the back of the chairs.

Place rolled towels on the chairs of your guests or make a small display so that they know where to get one if they need it.

Use a white tablecloth and accentuate it with bright coloured bowls and plates. Place citronella candles on the ends of the table to deter any insects from flying around your food. Wrap your knives and forks in funky coloured napkins and place cute swizzle straws in all the glasses. Fill a few small vases with bright open flowers like daisies and lavender and place them on the table for a more formal look.

Tip: A fun idea is to make marshmallow name cards for all your guests using wooden kebab sticks. Kids will love them and your friends can roast them over the fire later.

Kiddies entertainment

While the adults enjoying a refreshing drink and congregating around the braai, ensure that children are out of your hair by providing them with swimming pool games and toys. You can buy a variety of water games, pool noodles and other floatation toys from your local supermarket or Builders Warehouse or you can choose to design your own games.

Be sure to explain proper pool safety to each child and keep an eye on them throughout the day. Victoria Taylor
