The municipal manager of Madibeng municipality in North West – which includes the towns of Brits and Hartbeespoort Dam – has been fired. Phillemon Mapulane was found guilty on 15 charges of gross misconduct including bribery and corruption amounting to R650k.
Municipal spokesman Patrick Morathi said that several millions in missing funds had been uncovered during the investigations and reiterated that the municipality intended to recover any money due to it.
“Criminal proceedings have been instituted against the former municipal manager as well as against two service providers identified as having paid bribes to him. Further criminal charges are to be instituted against at least two other officials,” says Morathi.
Mapulane was suspended in October 2009 and was arrested in August this year after an audit of capital expenditure projects by the municipality revealed mismanagement of project funds amounting to more than R100-million.
The case against suspended chief financial officer, Nana Masithela will be heard on 18 January next year. Masithela was suspended in November amid allegations of serious misconduct.
