This is according to Anne Fry, manager of the Pam Golding Properties (PGP) Northcliff/West Rand region, who says many people of the region aspire to live in Northcliff one day.

The suburb is situated in one of the most scenic areas of Johannesburg and it is minutes from major road routes. Fry says residents find they have easy access to the entire city and every amenity they could need. "It is not for nothing that this suburb is one of the most prestigious and sought after in Johannesburg.”

She says homes in the area remain in demand even when the economy is sluggish. There are sectional title developments and complexes, but most properties are freestanding full title homes, with sizes varying from standard three bedrooms to large, prestigious propertiesand prices ranging between R1.7 million and R10.4 million, she says.

According to PGP’s Northcliff agent, Marie van Rensburg, most homes in the suburb are in demand. However, the properties that are set higher on the ridge with their tremendous views fetch good prices. Homes on the northern slope are also popular due to the fact the houses are warmer and sunnier in winter.

This three bedroom, three bathroom house is located near good schools and has three reception rooms and a family kitchen. It has an irrigated garden with water features, a swimming pool and garage space for three cars. Street guards patrol the street daily and the property is on the market for R1.95 million - click here to view.

The top of the ridge rises up to 1807 metres and one has an all-round view that is breathtaking and almost unrivalled anywhere else in the city. Iron Age artefacts were discovered here some years ago but these sites were not preserved. Today the ridge is used for walking, mountaineering, bird watching and kite flying activities and there is an ongoing programme to remove invader species of plant from these environs.

Van Rensburg says the residents are situated close to Beyers Naudé Drive and the N1 motorway, which are among the most important routes in Johannesburg, giving them easy access to all of the northern suburbs as well as the Sandton and Johannesburg CBDs. "Northcliff’s inhabitants are fortunate to be right where the action is,” she says.

Young families appreciate the schools that are nearby. According to Van Rensburg, these cater for a number of cultures, religions and language groups. Some of the better known schools found in the area include Northcliff High School, Randburg High School, Abbots College, Northwest Christian School and Cliffview Primary School. The University of Johannesburg and University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), are also situated within 10 kilometres away.

This four bedroom, three bathroom home has spacious open-plan lving spaces and modern finishes. It has a lot of natural light and large entertainment areas, as well as a meditation area with a koi pond. The property has a garden and swimming pool and it is on the market for R4.9 million - click here to view.

Major malls such as Cresta Centre and Beyers Naudé Drive offer residents great shopping and entertainment and for those looking for something different, the suburbs of Melville and Greenside are close by and offer a vibrant pavement culture. There are restaurants closer to home, including Indulgence Café, Lambrusco’s Italian Dining, Eat Bistro, Legends Grill and Morrell’s Boutique Venue.

Residents don’t have far to travel to have a day out at Emmarentia Dam, which is an ideal place to walk one’s dog or have a picnic. For the individual who would like to spend some time in manicured gardens, the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens are worth a visit. The Iron Age furnace at Melville Koppies is a national monument and gives an idea of the kind of societies that would likely have been found on Northcliff Ridge at the time. Residents also have access to highly rated golf courses like Randpark and Windsor Park.

Van Rensburg says Northcliff offers some of the finest suburban living in Gauteng and the fact that properties have remained in demand over the last ten years is indicative of the strength of the market. "We expect this trend to continue well into the foreseeable future,” she says.
