Benoni's residential fortunes have grown exponentially and it is by no means the little mining 'dorpie' that many non-residents imagine.
This is according to estate agent Lydia van der Merwe, who says it has become a refined destination, yet managed to retain its atmosphere of a closely-knit, caring community that is primarily family-oriented.
The Harcourts property group has increased its footprint on the East Rand by awarding the franchise rights for Benoni and surrounds to experienced estate agent Van der Merwe who has specialised in this high-end property market for the past eight years.
“The new franchise, Harcourts Elite, will focus on the many luxury housing estates in and around Benoni,” she says.
Professionals from different disciplines, such as medicine, engineering and IT, are among the high net worth buyers choosing to work and live in the area, although some settle in the quiet suburbs, many prefer the luxury lifestyles offered by top-notch housing estates, says Van der Merwe.
Most top-end buyers target homes in the R4 million-plus price range, and buyers have an ample choice of homes in Benoni estates to match their preferred lifestyles.
For example, golfing enthusiasts usually choose to live in the signature Ebotse Golf Estate in Rynfield where prices range between R3.5 million and R14 million and residents enjoy top security in peaceful surroundings.
She says buyers who put a premium on privacy are drawn to the generous stands of between 2 500 square metres and 5 000 square metres in Rynfield Estates. This leafy enclave offers a genteel lifestyle and the large gardens ensure privacy and peace and quiet. Prices start at around R2.5 million and newer homes are valued at up to R10 million.
Meanwhile, horse-lovers congregate in the Dunblane Equestrian Estate in Bredell on the border between Benoni and Kempton Park. This estate is set on gently rolling grounds and is surrounded by low density agricultural land. It also has an equine hydrotherapy facility for horses stabled on the estate.
One of the most luxurious homes on Harcourts Elite's books currently is a residence in Dunblane that offers 1 760 square metres under roof on a stand of 10 000 square metres. This home offers five bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms and walk-in cupboards, a guest suite, a grand dining room, formal lounge, a cinema room and an art room. It also comes with six garages and staff quarters, and is on the market for R22 million.
A little further afield in Boksburg, the Monte Cristo Estate offers an eclectic collection of upmarket homes and is favoured by businessmen as well as professionals. Listings in this estate include a home in the traditional Tuscan style for R5.85 million and two homes in the Art Deco style at R4.5 million and R4.2 million respectively.
