Joburg buyers are increasingly drawn to the Drakensberg region as a weekend getaway destination.
This can clearly be seen from the buyer profile at the 3,000 hectare Dunblane lifestyle estate in the Northern Drakensburg Mountains.
"Locals from Newcastle showed a keen interest in the development, but the bulk of the buyers came from Johannesburg," says Marx Bach, sales manager at Dunblane.
"They probably see it as the ideal destination to escape to over weekends as it's only three hours' drive away. Pretoria buyers haven't shown nearly as much interest and I presume that they prefer other destinations, such as the Lowveld, as a closer and more convenient option," he says.
Of the 771 plots, 32 will be fractional ownership title units, 128 sectional title units and freehold will be divided into two main categories based on sizes of between 300 and 500sq m cluster village properties, to between 700 and 1,400sq m residential properties. The values of the stands range from R390k to R450k, as well as from R500k to R1,2m for respective size categories.
Dunblane has been fully approved by the relevant authorities and construction of the golf course is already under way.
Dunblane promotes the concept of a smart village, with closed circuit TV, intercom, fibre optics to each home for satellite TV and phones. The expansive estate will have secure entrances manned 24 hours a day and will be protected by a three-metre-high game fence monitored 24 hours a day.
The estate will also eventually boast an environmental centre that will serve as a springboard for a sundry array of environmental activities. The centre will allow residents to take guided nature walks and tours, go for game drives, watch bird and animal shows at the 50-seat amphitheatre and view reptiles such as snakes and other animals in glass cabinets.
2012 is the estimated completion date for the development. - Eugene Brink
