Whether or not you are a big fan of Valentine's Day, it is the one day a year we are allowed to shower someone with ridiculous, random gifts.
Not all of these gifts have to be lavish or expensive and usually the best and most kept ones, come straight from the heart. So here are a few suggestions for gifts you can make using things at home...
For the lovely lady
A great idea is to put together a care package. Use a heart shaped box you can get from a card store, or simply a redecorated shoe box, fill it to the brim with her favourite sweets, candies and chocolates. Get personal and throw in a few little love notes.
If your partner doesn’t have a sweet tooth, then try a spa day package and fill the box with bath salts, lotions and bubble bath. Add a few candles she can put round the tub and toss in some flower petals for effect.
Spend the night at home with a romantic movie box. Get a bottle of wine or champagne, some fresh fruit or good old fashioned popcorn and a selection of classic movies; place them in a box on the coffee table, with a blanket thrown over the couch and prepare for a night of snuggling.
Serve her breakfast in bed with her own personalised tray. You can make this nifty gift using a standard picture frame and two drawer handles. Then, simply slot an adorable couple photo into the frame and place some flowers alongside whatever you're serving.
Tip: Make exchanging presents fun by creating a treasure hunt. Strategically place Post-its around the house and make your partner follow the trail.
Another great idea is to make a mini chalkboard to slip into the frame. That way, you can write a personal message and change it whenever you like. The tray also makes for great home decor once Valentine's Day has passed.
If you are both sentimental and you have a hoard of small souvenirs of your relationship, you can always place these items in a decorated box, along with a few love letters. Get creative and use a bottle or make a collage of pictures you have taken throughout your time together.
Using the tiles from an old Scrabble game, you can make a one of a kind photo frame. Use the tiles to spell out sweet words or phrases and glue them onto a standard wooden frame.
For the gentleman
Men are difficult to shop for, especially on Valentine's Day, as all the gifts are soppy and pink. Create a cool 'guy gift' using a metal stamp kit. The possibilities are endless as you can stamp any message, date or pair of initials on any metal surface, such as bracelets or frames.
Use this method and create a vintage looking key ring. You can use a standard metal disk or, if you can find one, a metal guitar pick. Stamp whatever your heart desires onto the disk. Add a sweeter element and buy a small glass vial, write a message on a piece of paper or linen and slip it in. Then attach them to a ring for the keys and you're done.
Create a set of chalkboard coasters for the man in your life. These are easy to make, as you can buy plain wooden coasters from any craft store. Then simply spray them with Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalk Board Spray and write a series of messages across them.
Another great idea is to make a set of Scrabble tiled coasters. Using words of at least four letters, you can make messages and phrases for individual coasters.
Whipping up a batch of his favourite baked goods are a sure fire way to please him this Valentine's Day. Place them in a cute box or jar, with a personalised printed label and wrap a bright ribbon around it. Slip in a flower for effect.
Spice things up in the bedroom by making a game on your bed sheet. Based on the game 'Twister', the bed sheet can have a number of tasks, challenges and dares for your partner, which will be fun for both of you. – Victoria Taylor
