Instead of buying the same dull stepping stones as everyone else, why not make your own? Create concrete stepping stones with an organic design that you can make using elements from your own garden.
These concrete stepping stones are much nicer than the ready-made ones you buy and are quick and easy to make. All you will need is a large leaf.
You can use rhubarb, gunnera, philodendron leaves or any plant that has large veined leaves, quick set cement, a large cardboard tube or cake tin and some Spray 'n Cook.
Whatever you use as a mould for the stepping stone should fit nicely over the leaf. You want to show as many of the veins on the back of the leaf as possible. The more veins your leaf has, the more detailed the stepping stone will be.
Spray the inside of the mould with Cook 'n Spray to make it easier to remove once the cement has set. Then place the leaf on a flat, level surface and position the mould on top.
Mix up the cement and pour into the mould. The cement doesn't need to be any thicker than about 4cm, any thicker and the cement may not set properly.
Leave it to cure for the recommended time and then carefully remove the mould to reveal your detailed stepping stone. Now you are ready to make the next one.
The great thing about this project is that you can use a variety of elements to make different stepping stones, and you are not only restricted to leaves. You can also get some concrete tint to add a bit of colour to them.
