Whether it’s an ongoing tradition or a ‘I’m willing to try it once’ kind of situation, decorating the table with Easter themed props is always a fun way of surprising your family and friends.
The thing about it is, the décor is always on the sunny side and it has just the right amount of humour to put everyone in a good mood.
Dress the table in a plain, pastel or white coloured tablecloth to begin with. This simple start allows you to build on the décor and, because your foundation is almost blank, you can take the whole setting in just about any direction you choose.
For a more exciting creation, cover the table with polka dots, florals or gingham. You could also use this upbeat theme on your napkins, Easter egg designs and plates.
You could try something different and use an Easter themed table runner, which can be made from pieces of fabric and craft supplies.
Coordinate place settings and place cards
Creativity and a few items from the art store are the answer to incorporating place cards into place settings.
Work with a small, galvanised bucket in a cheerful colour to set up a fun place card. Use a permanent marker to write down your guest’s name on the outside of the bucket and fill it with your choice of Easter treats.
If you have a little more time on your hands, top up your brightly coloured bucket with jelly beans then layer the last bit with raffia to make a nest. Rest a chocolate delight on the finished product and arrange the whole thing on a plate.
If you don’t think it’s too much, tie a dainty satin ribbon around the bucket handle and present this to your guests as a place card and a gift to take home.
Another cute idea to try is a fork-and-knife napkin setup. For this exercise, you’ll need to source a coloured plate from your cupboard to use as your base. Place a napkin with patterns across a plate then use a second napkin, with a different colour or pattern from the first, to wrap your fork and knife.
Tie a ribbon around the fork and knife arrangement and lay it down on the first napkin. Finally, place a cut out silhouette of a rabbit or Easter chick, bearing the name of your guest, onto the whole setting.
A beautiful flower arrangement works well for Easter table settings.
One idea that still keeps to the Easter theme is to place a slender vase or small drinking glass inside a large jar with a wide mouth.
Decorate the space in-between the jar and vase with different coloured eggs or Easter Bunny shaped marshmallows, then pour water into the slender vase before placing your flowers in it.
You could also opt to keep things simple by filling a large bowl with DIY Easter eggs. To keep it interesting, use different designs , patterns and fabrics to make your eggs.
Another idea to try is to arrange fake grass on a small tray. Litter the surface of the tray with edible treats and, in the middle of this arrangement, place a small bunny or fuzzy chick to guard over your décor.
If you run out of ideas just remember to keep up the use of colour and characters.
Use tinted tumbler glasses to pick up on the tablecloth hues and fold some napkins into hopping bunnies.
Introduce place mats and coasters with figures from Easter and incorporate egg cups into the décor. Use wicker baskets and fluffy chicks to help you celebrate the holidays. Happy Easter! – Katlego Sekano
