Over time, the ink (and only proof that you met your favourite celebrity) on an autographed t-shirt will start to fade, unless you employ some preservation tactics. Here are some tips...
1. To make sure that you’ll still be able to show off your shirt a year from now, set the ink using heat.
You can do this using heat from an iron or the dryer.
The iron method involves placing a clean cloth over the signature and ironing over it, at the highest possible temperature without burning it.
Press into the autograph without using any steam for at least one minute.
Alternatively, you could place the shirt in the dryer and turn up the heat. Leave the shirt in for 15 to 20 minutes.
2. If you’re still doubtful after this, soak the t-shirt in white vinegar.
3. Once you’re ready to wash the garment, turn it inside out, then use cold water and a gentle detergent to launder it.
The ink will eventually fade after a number of washes but the initial heat treatment will ensure that you can brag about meeting the real deal for some time to come. – Katlego Sekano
