Construction activity at the Medupi Power Station has seen a sudden increase in the number of sectional title complexes being built in Thabazimbi. Investors who bought these properties are letting them out to contract workers responsible for work on the new power station.

According to Assis Pontes, area manager of Pam Golding Properties, there was just one sectional title complex in the town but now there are ten. The most popular units comprise two bedrooms, two bathrooms and are priced at R662k, providing monthly rentals of about R6 500 each.

A new industrial park, strategically positioned in an industrial corridor between the new Medupi and existing Matimba power stations near Grootgeluk colliery in Lephalale is being developed by Professional Development Consortium Holdings to cater for the many industries in the area.

Pontes says there are 82 stands in the first phase of this development with erven ranging from 5 000 to 18 000 sqm and priced at R610 a square metre.

“With all the growth and development in the region, Hanglip Industrial Park is aimed at industries that provide services and goods to companies in the construction, mining and energy sectors. There are opportunities to rent industrial space and these will be tailor made to suit the client’s specific requirements,” says Pontes.

“This region is generally considered the fastest growing node in Africa and Hanglip Indstrial Park is ideally positioned in the hub of this region,” he says.

The approval and design phase of the industrial park has been completed and construction is due to begin in the second half of next year.
