Three properties that form part of the Boschendal wine estate fetched R43m at an auction held on Monday by Alliance Group in partnership with Pam Golding Properties (PGP).

The auction – which took place in a marquee on Boschendal during a sudden rain storm – drew big interest and were attended by, amongst others, representatives of the Kuwait and JSE-listed IFA Hotels & Resorts, who already has a controlling stake in the estate via an affiliate.

Mark Borrie, a British businessman, bought the 21ha Goede Hoop property for R23,5m.

The new owner of a Cape Dutch home on the property, which dates from 1821, said he's planning to reside there. He also owns the Hawksmoor House boutique hotel on the Matjieskuil farm outside Stellenbosch.

Two founder estates were auctioned at the same event. The one is situated on a property of 20,7ha and fetched R10m at the auction. The second, on 21ha, was sold for R9,5m. However, these sales are still subject to approval by the owners as the prices are lower than they had hoped to achieve.

Both these properties were bought by a Kuwaiti investor. A representative of the investor said the new owner isn't planning to develop the property, but to sell it later at a better price.

Although earlier indications were that the historic Rhodes Cottage on 42ha and the Old Bethlehem farm (consisting of seven farms with a total surface area of 277 hectares), that form part of the larger Boschendal estate, were also going to be auctioned, this did not in fact happen. However, the properties are still on the market. – Carin Smith, Sake24
